iBook/MacBook Laptop Manual For Parent
Every iBook/MacBook comes with a padded laptop case. In the case you will find an iBook or MacBook, a power adaptor with extension cord, and a shoulder strap. All of these items must be returned at the end of the year when the laptop is handed back for maintenance.
iBook/MacBook identification When you open the laptop, on the left is a label with a barcode and your child’s name and user ID. On the top of the iBook/MacBook is engraved ETSB and a number indicating the year the iBook/MacBook was first issued.
Cleaning the iBook/MacBook We recommend the following to keep your child’s computer clean: • Do not have food or drink around the laptop. Aside from the chances of spilling, your child can get the computer dirty from residue on his/her fingers. • If your child has been doing anything that would get his/her hands dirty, have him/her was his/her hands before using the iBook/MacBook • Don’t leave the laptop in a very dusty or dirty environment.
Fluids are the number one enemy of electronic items. If something is spilled on the laptop, turn the laptop off immediately and unplug it. If there is standing liquid, pour it off and dry the residue. Leave the iBook/MacBook overnight to allow it to dry. Bring the laptop to school the next day and report the incident. Do NOT use household products (e.g. Windex) to clean the iBook/MacBook. Use a damp (water) cloth only. To clean the display, use a damp lint-free cloth wiping in a downward motion. Dry the same way.
Charging the iBook/MacBook
The iBook/MacBook must be fully charged before it is brought to school. The laptop may be charged when it is off, asleep or while your child is using it. The iBook/MacBook may be safely charged overnight.
iBook/MacBook Specifications The iBook hardware specifications include a Power PC 1 Ghz (or better) CPU, 256 Mb memory, a 20 or 30 Gb hard drive, CD ROM, airport card (for wireless capability), 12.1 inch screen, 56K modem and 10/100 Base-T Ethernet. The MacBook hardware specifications include a 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo processor, 512 Mb memory, 60 Gb hard drive, combo drive, 13.3 inch screen, 10/100 Base-T Ethernet. Note that there is no internal 56K modem.
The software pre-loaded onto the iBook/MacBook includes Microsoft Office X (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), AppleWorks, Firefox (browser), Acrobat Reader, iMovie, iPhoto and many more.
