We must know that it would happen eventually. Last year, the famous BMW 5-series did not win a comparative test and eventually fell off our 10Best list. The 5-series has grown so familiar with the win was our enthusiastic hearts after more than five years (which seems an eternity in modern car biz), speaks volumes of praise. But the 2003 5-series eventually took the fall, the second place to the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Although it might be time for a change, we were still nervous about the fate of one of our favorite sports-luxury Sedan.
Indeed, we heard that the new 2004 model would have unnecessarily complicated iDrive information and entertainment system from the 7-series. Just as worrying, we knew that the new car, the ominous sounding “active front steering, larger sizes and designs that mimic the sometimes difficult technical-looking 7-series. Well, all these things came true in the form of the 2004 5-series, and – you know what? – We still like the thing. And, through the generous use of aluminum, the 2004 5-series is lighter than the outgoing car, despite the larger size. And the iDrive button, which camp was on the center console (behind the shifter), working fewer features than the 7-series and is slightly easier to find. It appears from the active control is only available on Sport Package-equipped models and works well. At low speeds the steering ratio is 10:1 for a quick sense of nimbleness, while at high speeds a lot slower 18:1 ratio is used to the car feel less nervous. The transitions from fast to slow, almost imperceptible. All engine choices are published earlier. The base engine is the 2.5-liter inline six in the 525i.
The upgrade in the 530i models, the familiar 3.0-liter six. New for 2004 is the availability of the 7-series 325-hp 4.4-liter V-8 instead of the 290-horsepower unit from last year. All are available with a choice of three six-speed transmissions: stick sequential manual and conventional automatic. We will have to wait at least another year for the next M5, rumored to be powered by a 500-hp V-10.
